Jawan Young Male Leopard of Yala National Park

Sri Lanka has earned a strong reputation as one of the best places in the world to see leopards in their natural habitat. Among Sri Lanka’s wildlife destinations, Yala National Park stands out for its remarkable leopard population and is often recognised as one of the highest leopard-density areas in the world.

Jawan

In this wild landscape lives Jawan, officially known as YM82. He is one of the most exciting young male leopards in Yala National Park. Since his first record in July 2025, Jawan has attracted safari visitors, wildlife photographers, and leopard lovers with his confidence, strength, and active behaviour.

Jawan is a male leopard, and researchers have not confirmed his mother yet. When observers first recorded him, they estimated his age at around two to three years. He often moves around Tanki Gala, Jamburagala, and Thelambukema, areas with rocky outcrops, forest cover, shade, and good hunting opportunities. Mevan Piyasena suggested the nickname Jawan.

Most young male leopards move carefully when they begin to explore or build a new range. They usually stay hidden and avoid unnecessary conflict until they understand the landscape and the presence of other leopards. Jawan shows a different character. From his early sightings, he moved with confidence and purpose, like a leopard already learning how to face the challenges of Yala’s wild environment.

Jawan often spends long hours on large rocks or rests high among tree branches. These elevated resting places give him shade, safety, and a clear view of the surrounding area. For safari visitors and photographers, these moments create beautiful and memorable sightings, especially when he rests calmly against Yala’s natural rocky landscape.

Jawan also shows energetic and unpredictable behaviour. At times, he rests quietly, but within moments he may move through the forest, climb rocky ground, or watch his surroundings with full attention. This active nature makes many visitors hope to see him during a safari.

Wildlife photographer Nandana Williams has photographed Jawan many times during his visits to Yala National Park. Through repeated sightings and careful observation, Nandana has recorded this Leopard  as one of the familiar and memorable young leopards in his Yala wildlife collection. Although Jawan is still young, he already carries a strong presence. His confidence, bold movement, and growing strength suggest that he may become an important male leopard in this part of Yala in the coming years. In a landscape where leopards compete strongly for territory, every young male must prove himself through survival, movement, and territory-building.

With his bold character, powerful appearance, and remarkable behaviour, Jawan YM82 is quickly becoming one of the memorable young male leopards of Yala National Park. For safari visitors, photographers, and leopard lovers, Jawan is certainly a name to remember.
